The Space In Between

Minor Sound Design
During my research minor 'Sound Design' I wanted to research a couple of things. 1 Explore and generate music, 2 Interact with sound & music (for instance with the Wii-Mote) and 3 Learn about music theory.

At first I wanted to find out how I could 'perform' my digital music, without touching my computer. I figured out how I could use the Wii-mote as a midi controller, changing beats and alterings sounds in an gestural way. The second thing I did was write a program that generates music, and alter the music with an external input device like a mouse or a Wii-Mote.

Interval and Distance
I had loads of possibilities with my final project, and chose two different concepts to work on. What interested me from learning about music theory was the Interval. The interval is the note distance between one note and another. The distance between two notes determine the characteristics and 'color' of the combined sound. I wanted people to experience this particular part.

I built an environment where people could move around, and experience that the distance between each other would change the Interval. People would literally interact with each other (as notes do) when they hear the interval and their notes-distance.

Generative/Interactive Play
The final project was a combination of generative music and interactive performance. I built an installation space where people can move around, and according to their position in the room, change the notes of the generated chords. I want people to play and explore with sound-space relation. Eventually people can play their own songs by listening to what they are doing, and reacting by moving through space.
