About his work
Graduation
Mischa Daams recently (September 2010) graduated from Communication & Multimedia Design at the Academy of Media and User Experience in Breda. For his graduation project Mischa created a playful location-based interactive story for children and wrote his bachelor thesis on “the total experience in contemporary media art”.
Different types of work
For the last three years of his study Mischa has enjoyed working on several different types of projects, with different purposes and different user experiences. Overally speaking, Mischa’s line of work could be subdivided in three main subjects: Interactive installations, Performance works and locative experiences.
Interactive Audiovisual Experiences
The mixture of various courses and subjects that Mischa chose throughout the years help to explain how he gradually specialized in something he calls ‘interactive audiovisual experiences’: During two minors, ‘Sound Design’ and ‘Time Based Arts’, he respectfully made an interactive sound installation that explains musical differences in a tactile way and a short film on the perception of the blind. During his six month internship at the Blue Noise Department in Amsterdam, Mischa worked on two projects: A media-rich total theater performance for dutch comedian Howard Komproe, wherefore he designed the surround sound and performed it live alongside Howard and the video-director in Pathé movie theaters throughout the Netherlands. For the second project he initiated and did research and development on an interactive visual show for a big band called the B-Movie Orchestra. The system he developed gives the band members the opportunity to remix old B-movies by playing their instruments, thereby creating a synesthetic audiovisual experience.
Designing control
One of the things that are key to Mischa’s work is the way that the audience becomes subject of the work. The way the audience experiences these sense-stimulating environments - whether they fulfill an active or passive role - is his main concern. Mischa creates these interactive audiovisual systems to serve this main purpose: to immerse the audience in a synesthetic experience.
